Our History
Founded in 1936 on the belief that everyone deserves the highest quality representation.
Following the Great Depression, Orangeburg County saw its share of poverty, inequality, and poor standards of living. Seeing the dire circumstances of his home, Marshall B. Williams Sr. sought to empower his community by founding a family-owned law firm that could safeguard the interests of his friends and neighbors.
Seeking greater impact, Marshall B. Williams ran for the South Carolina State Senate, and served from 1953-1995, acting as President Pro Tempore from 1989 until his death. Well known throughout the state as both a trial lawyer and politician, he worked six days a week meeting with clients and constituents alike.
His son, Charles H. Williams II, admired and appreciated his father’s work. After joining the firm in 1975, it quickly became known throughout the state as Williams & Williams.
The Williams family in Orangeburg—everybody knows them. They’ve been a part of the community for as long as anyone can remember.
Charles H. Williams II continued his father's commitment to exceptional legal counsel and community service.
Charles H. Williams II managed Williams & Williams for many years to great success.
Judge Karen J. Williams, Charles’ wife, began practicing law with the firm in 1980 before serving on the bench of the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals—the first woman ever to do so. Judge Williams went on to become the Chief Judge of the Fourth Circuit. While she held court for one week each month in Richmond, Virginia, her primary office always remained in Orangeburg.
Under Charles’ leadership, Senator C. Bradley Hutto joined the firm in 1981—balancing his roles as a top trial lawyer and Minority Leader in the State Senate. Senator Hutto is still an active attorney today, and considered by many to be one of the finest legal minds in the state.
I think family’s everything. My wife was a lawyer and a federal judge, all four of our children are lawyers, my father was a lawyer. What I probably enjoy more than anything is watching my sons try cases.
Today, the name Williams & Williams remains synonymous with skilled trial lawyers, tenacious advocates, and committed community servants.
Every member of Williams & Williams furthers our proud legacy of exceptional legal counsel and care for every one of its clients.
Williams & Williams now boasts a dynamic team of attorneys who call Orangeburg home. David R. Williams, Virginia W. Williams, Russell A. Blanchard IV, Senator Hutto’s son, Skyler Hutto, Andy Delaney and Maya Grace Slaughter form the new generation of Williams & Williams.
Working in a family law firm requires that you put your reputation first. You carry a reputation that long precedes you, starting with my grandfather in the legal profession.
